Welcome!
Welcome to the KMS NJHS page! On this page, you'll find answers to questions about the club, its members, and the selection of those members.
If you have any questions regarding membership, activities, community service, or the selection process, feel free to contact Mr. DiBenedetto.
What is NJHS?
NJHS is a club that meets regularly and plans/sponsors community service events. We currently meet on Wednesday mornings from 8:00 a.m. to 8:35 a.m. Our community service projects happen year-round and could occur during the school week or on the weekends.
The Qualities of Membership are:
- Academics: Active engagement in learning and the craving of new knowledge or understandings
- Service: voluntarily contributing to the school or community
- Leadership: resourceful problem solving, promotion of school activities, idea contribution, and dependability
- Character: high standards of honesty, reliability, courtesy, cooperation, concern, and respect for others
- Citizenship: high regard for freedom, justice, and democracy - possible involvement in scouting, community organizations, and other school clubs
Which students can join?
Any current KMS 7th/8th Grade student who has achieved a cumulative average of 70% PD scores for Quarter 1. He or she must be nominated before being selected.
Students new to our school who have previously selected for membership at another school need only reach out and provide a copy of membership certificate--they do not need to go through the selection process again.
How are students nominated for NJHS?
The students meeting the academic criteria of a cumulative average of 70% PD scores for Quarter 1 will be notified via Homeroom that they have been nominated for membership selection. This notification will not be sent until after all grades have closed and been reported for Q1.
What happens after a student is nominated?
Once nominated, students should follow the directions on the nomination notice, and they will have a few weeks to fill out their Member Eligibility Packet, which will detail their level of involvement in service, leadership, character, and citizenship.
How are students selected?
The ANONYMOUS five-member Faculty Council reviews all Member Eligibility Packets, looking for high levels of documented service, leadership, character, and citizenship. An objective point value system is applied to analyzing the packets, and a common rubric is used for scoring the essay. The packet's score, the score of the essay, and discussion-based consideration by the five anonymous members are all combined to provide the decisions for selection or non-selection.
At no time does the adviser, nor any faculty members not part of the anonymous Faculty Council, make or contribute to the decision making process.
At no time are letters of recommendation required or consulted.
Although the process is meant to be as objective as possible, neither the packet's score, nor the score of the essay(s) will automatically determine selection or non-selection.
What is the Faculty Council?
Five anonymous members of the faculty who oversee the selection of students and create the by-laws of the club. These faculty members may or may not change year-to-year. Only the school principal and the adviser have knowledge of the group’s membership.
What happens when students are selected?
Students receive a congratulatory letter and will be invited to the Induction Ceremony in mid-March to early April. (The date changes each year, depending on the school’s schedule.
What happens if a student isn't selected?
Students will receive a letter explaining that they have not met the requirements outlined by the national organization and the local chapter. If a 7th grade student is not selected, he/she has another chance in 8th grade for nomination.
