Keene School District Announces Principal for Keene Middle School

Smith is currently the Director of Curriculum and Instruction at Keene High School (KHS), a position he has held since joining SAU 29 in July 2020. Smith currently oversees and develops professional development opportunities and workshops for KHS educators in addition to overseeing the Social Studies Department and leading the Instructional Leadership Team at KHS.

Smith holds an Advanced Degree in Educational Leadership from Sacred Heart University (CT). Prior to joining SAU 29 and relocating to New Hampshire from Connecticut, Smith served as the Social Studies Team Leader at Whisconier Middle School. He previously held the positions of Social Studies teacher at Brookfield High School (2005-2019) and Summer School Director with EdAdvance.

Following a thorough vetting of applicants by a selection committee comprised of staff and school board members, Mr. Smith was one of three finalists brought forward to participate in a community forum. “Mr. Smith has been a dynamic leader at Keene High School since joining the team in 2020,” said Assistant Superintendent Brian Campbell. “He has demonstrated the ability to lead a staff of educators through the complex process of the
implementation of competency-based instruction. His knowledge and leadership in this area will be an asset to the competency work already underway at Keene Middle School.”

As principal of Keene Middle School (KMS), Mr. Smith will be responsible for directing the overall site operations, services, and staff at the school. Keene Middle School has a current enrollment of 626 students in grades 6 through 8 encompassing students from Keene, Harrisville, Marlow and Nelson. In addition, students from sending towns of Surry, Sullivan and Stoddard also attend Keene Middle School. Smith will succeed current Principal Deanna Zilske, who has been in the position since 2017 and will be moving on to Jaffrey (NH) Grade School, a K3 school within SAU 47.

Upon learning of his selection, Mr. Smith stated, “I am deeply thankful for the opportunity to work with the students, families, and staff members of Keene Middle School. KMS has an excellent reputation and I am looking forward to being part of such a dedicated, passionate, and hard-working team!”
