Philosophy:  Comprehension is the sum of all physical, mental and emotional processes that result in the creation of meaning from written material.  Using research-based strategies for reading instruction,  KMS reading teachers will help students develop and improve their capacity to perceive and understand the skills that enable them to read proficiently and meaningfully a variety of literary and informational grade-level materials. Students will reinforce their literal understanding of their reading and will continue to strengthen and develop the skills necessary for inferential and evaluative comprehension so that reading becomes a tool for the acquisition of information and a source of pleasure in the pursuit of personal interests.

Requirements:  KMS students will be able to demonstrate their understanding in the reading of  grade-level literary and informational texts by:

  1. Finding the main idea
  2. Recalling facts and details
  3. Distinguishing between fact and opinion
  4. Finding the meaning of words through context
  5. Identifying author's purpose
  6. Recognizing the characteristics of genre
  7. Understanding sequence
  8. Recognizing cause and effect to explain
  9. Comparing and contrasting within and across texts
  10. Making logical predictions
  11. Making inferences
  12. Drawing conclusions
  13. Interpreting figurative language such as alliteration, dialogue, metaphors, simile, idioms, etc.
  14. Demonstrating their knowledge of literary elements such as theme, tone, conflict, and characterization
  15. Identifying and using structural elements that organize information or plot structures.
  16. Using visual information such as graphs, charts, and illustrations
  17. Summarizing and paraphrasing
